201503 Tokyo-Izu Peninsula Road Trip Day 7

Dogashima Cave Cruise

Dogashima, on the west side of Izu Peninsula, was not served by the trains. To get around to the west side of Izu Peninsula, the best option was to drive as even the public buses were not frequent.

When we reached Dogashima, we checked in at our lodging and selected our dinner time before heading out for the cruise. We went over to Dogashima Marine to sign up for the Dogashima Cave Cruise, one of the 4 cruises they had. We decided to do the cruise on this day to free up time the next day for other adventures.

The rock formations at Dogashima was astounding; how the earth’s movements and erosion from waves and wind over thousands and millions of years curved out these interesting layered rock formations. Mother Nature’s creations, not any human hands could create.

The highlight of the cruise was a visit to a cave with skylight shinning through a hole in a rock island. It was possible to walk to this rock island and look through the skylight hole from the top.

Sunset at Dogashima

Dogashima was also known for its beautiful sunsets. Our cruise ended at the right time and gave us plenty of time to catch the sunset.

I have to say Dogashima’s sunset was really beautiful. I couldn’t help but took many photos even after we returned to our lodging. What a breathtaking, warm and glowing sunset it was.

Dinner at Ryokan

We stayed at Dogashima Hotel Tenyu that night. I had booked the stay with half board (dinner and breakfast) and we were looking forward to soaking in the onsen and a Kaiseiki dinner. We opted for a late dinner and went for an onsen bath before dinner.

After a nice bath, we settled down for our Kaiseiki dinner – more Izu Peninsula Seafood! If I recalled correctly, the meal was generally okay except one of the fish dish didn’t taste that fresh.

After a full dinner, we decided to take a little walk in our Yukatas around the area. We popped by the Kombini and SY bought a “girlie” magazine as we were rather curious since these were sold openly. Let’s just say we found out that some Japanese housewives had afternoon activities. No photos, the magazine was left at the Ryokan.

おやすみなさい (Oyasuminasai) – Good night!
