201503 Tokyo-Izu Peninsula Road Trip Day 6

Watching Sunset at Shimoda

Our stay for the night was at Shimoda Tokyu Hotel up on a hill. As we had some time before dinner, we took a walk down from the hotel to the beach to take in the surrounding coast and sunset.

Izakaya Dinner

We made a short drive back to the town and randomly popped into Izakaya ぼちぼち (Bochi Bochi) for dinner. At that time, Google Translate didn’t have the word translation scanning function yet and we had limited data for roaming as well. We just checked the menu to see if there were any Chinese characters that we recognised and tried to order food that way. Japanese Kanji characters are similar to Chinese characters, thus knowing some Chinese words would be helpful when travelling in Japan.

We had initially ordered 1 portion per item. When we saw that the serving was only for 1 person, we decided to order 2 portions of everything. As Shimoda was famous for Splendid Kinmedai (金目鯛) also known as Alfonsino or Golden Eye Snapper, we definitely had to try some. We also tried a number of grilled and fried sticks.

We made a booboo

When it came to 2 food items we ordered, we received funny looks from the waitress. She asked if we really wanted 2 portions and we confidently told her “はい” (Hai) – Yes. When the items were served, we realised that we order 2 portions of cucumbers with crab miso dip and another 2 portions with a miso bean dip. So we ended up with 4 plates of cucumbers! 🤣 Most people would have shared a portion of each as those were considered as appetisers.

Luckily both SY and I liked the cucumbers and dips. We ate up all the cucumbers and it balanced well with the grilled and fried food we had. It was an enjoyable dinner though not a cheap one (I think we spent about S$50 for dinner). Everything tasted good especially the Kinmedai sashimi and grilled sticks.

After thoughts

Looking back on this part of our trip, I think it would be best to split Jogasaki Coast and the waterfalls into 2 days. There would be more time for hiking at each place and taking in all the waterfalls. However, not completing all also gave me an excuse for a future revisit to Izu Peninsula Jogasaki Coast and the waterfalls. 😉

おやすみなさい (Oyasuminasai) – Good night!
